Day 30
Hi friends and family! It’s a month after the transplant and things are looking good still. How I feel is a different story- recovery from this transplant is much slower than anything in the past. I am tired and nauseous for most of my day. I have been too weak to do much of anything- heck, updating this blog has been my big task for today. I go in to the hospital clinic several times a week to have my blood tested for any issues or signs of graft vs. host.
I will be on what I call ‘house arrest’ for the next 70 days. I am supposed to avoid crowds and public places, wear a mask if I go outside, and I can’t eat restaurant food or take-out.
Gary went home for a long weekend, so Kat is staying home from work to take care of me. We are enjoying our time together, even when there isn’t much I can do. She is an amazing wife and I love her to the moon and back.

We just heard from your Mom that because of the infection earlier in july it took a toll on your heart and is now keeping your heart from working at full capacity. This must feel like a terrible set back. Don’t let this get you down. Keep believing that all will be OK. Once the doctor has that taken care of you’re on your way to transplant and recovery. Stay strong in your belief that you will see yourself through all of this and one day it will be like a bad dream.

Hey Craig and Kat! I finally found your site and got to catch up on everything that’s happening with you. Loved your wedding pictures, and you both look soooo happy. That day has been 43 years ago for us. I know you’re disappointed about waiting for the transplant but it’ll be here before you know and then– yahoo! On the way to living life cancer free! David went for his 5th start of 5 days of Vidaza. Hopefully, they’ll be able to become farther apart with time and lower cancer counts. Still no news of a match, but maybe that’s o.k. Our family just very recently went thru the identical ordeal. Our daughter had been diagnosed with AML and was treated at M.D.Anderson in Houston. Her brother who was a 50% match flew in from Austria to donate the bone marrow.
Have you considered a cord blood transplant?

The Dana Point Donor Drive. WOW what a success. We signed up 210 people today. Craig Brandmeier is a Dana Hills High school graduate, 24 years old, living in Portland and a newlywed. Craig was just admitted again to the hospital for another month of chemotherapy and in desperate need of a stem cell transplant. His brothers were not a match. I read about your situation in the DP Times..
I know exactly what your going through…I was diagnosed 10 years ago with Hodgekins Desease…
Cancer of the Lymph System..they initially thought I had Leukemia as the symptoms are similar Hodgekins. I was stage 4 and never new it…I was running marathons and competeing in Triathelons until the day I became symptimatic like you. I to had a bone marrow transplant in additon to a bone marrow harvest. Fortunately after 12 months of chemo, 9 months of radiation and alot of positive thinking I beat the ordeal…it was not an easy journey and not one I’d want to repeat. I can tell you that your positive attitude, strong support network and belief that you will beat it make a significant difference in your outcome. I have been in remission for 10 years and am a true believer that my outlook and strong belief that I would beat the cancer were instrumental in my recovery. No doubt standard medical protocol is critical but I can tell you more times than not people in remission have told me they believe thier outlook and ability to visualize being cancer free was another important component. No doubt the way you look at your life will change…priorities become comepletely differnt and friends and family become forefront.
Hey…I wish you great success in beating this and reading down the road that you are 10 years out in remission! Keep up the “I will beat this attitude”! It makes a difference.

I work with Michele and recieved her email on Tuesday about becoming a bone marrow donor.
I have worked for Staffmark a total of 9 years and no other co-worker has made an impression on me quite like Michele. I believe you are in very good hands.
I was invited back in 2000 by a client named Coleman Homes to come out for Relay For Life.
It was such a great experience I have been every year since. For the last couple years I have brought my family, my two daughters with me to campout at Cal State University. It is still rather cold in Bakersfield, but we have the best time coming together with the rest of the community and what a turn out we have!
I have never been to support a family member, until this year. I will be there in support of you and I am postive that once again you are in the best hands.
I cannot say enough for Relay For Life. They are truly a top notch organization

I haven’t met you yet – I work with Kat at PB. I told her this story last night. I have signed up to be a donor and mailed in my swabs a few days ago. Can not WAIT to hear if I’m a match for someone! My husband absolutely loathes needles, doctors, etc. but he himself (without me coaxing him!) went online and signed up yesterday. He has a friend at Nike who is in need of a transplant too, so I told him the best thing he could do is become a donor.

There is this wonderful young man (Craig Brandmeier) who comes from a great family, is recently engaged and has the world by the tail! Until one night in November he is rushed to the hospital with chest pains and finds out he has a rare blood disease, acute onset leukemia (AML). I have watched this event turn his world upside down, yet I see a young man with hope and an incredible spirit and love for life! There are so many wonderful and inspiring stories of hope and happiness associated with Craig’s fight and journey through this horrible turn of events in his life. As a good friend of the family I have watched Craig grow up into a successful, warm and loving young man. My wife and I witnessed his proposal to his girlfriend (Kat) early last fall at a family trip in Las Vegas. He has three loving brothers and very devoted parents. Craig’s brothers all shaved their heads when they went to visit him the first time in the hospital after he was diagnosed. He was recently married to Kat in his apartment and the pictures show an incredible love for life and each other. His family is desperate for help as Craig has not been able to find a stem cell match and he is running out of time.
I think his story is compelling and probably is not as uncommon as I would like to think. There needs to be a better awareness of this disease and how the public can help by getting tested for a simple stem cell match! Your show is the perfect venue not only to hopefully save Craig’s life but through public awareness save many other lives in similar situations! Please consider Craig’s story for one of your not too distant shows as he does not have much time!

I couldnt believe it when the girls at the shop told me you had leukemia! I know you can beat this and I’d glad you have Kat to cheer you through the process.
My ex was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002. He went through several trial studies at OHSU and had no success with finding a donor. He has been cancer free since 2006. If you havent looked into trial studies, please consider them. OHSU wrote off everything that insurance didnt cover and is always looking for new patients to join their trial studies.

Well i know u probably dont know me but i found your card at jamba juice in fairview. Well first of all i just wanna say sorry for wats happening but i know everythings gonna be okay. i almost know how you guys feel about all this b cuz me and my whole family all went through this about a month ago. My little 8 year old cousin got diagnosed with leukemia and since that day it just made everyone open their eyes. It’s like you think it wont happen to you or anyone you love but all of a sudden it does and your just like o my gosh like u cant believe it; it’s life. Well yea she had i think they said it was 70% so they told us it was gonna take years to get rid of it and to do everything that had to be done for her to be good. Okay So it lasted for like a month wen on christmas day my little cousins mom called the doctor like at 2am b cuz my little cousin had a big like bruised bump on her arm were they had poked her so she got scared and called the doctor to ask i that was normal. The doctor answered back saying that my little cousin didnt have it no more like it was all gone the leukemia was gone. After that she went back to check on my little cousins bruise she had been worrying about and it was all gone no bruise no nothing After the doctor had told her that from that moment evrything changed it was just unbelievable it was gone in one month! To tell u the truth i didnt really belive in miracles but since then i just felt like…WOW! Right now she still has to take all the medicines and stuff but isnt going to be as strong to make her feel that bad it;s just to make sure it doesnt come back. So after all this it just made me open my eyes and for that i know everything is going to be okay. I know i dont know you and your family but i will include u all in my prayers every night.

I am a friend of Sara’s and now a friend to you both. My name is Marla and I as well has my husband are cancer SURVIVORS! I had Hodgkin’s when I was 16 and was on treatment for 1 year. My husband had Leukemia A.L.L. when he was 5 and was on treatment for 6 years. Together we have been in remission a total of 47 years…17 for me and 30 for him! Sara has been keeping me posted on your progress and I have been sending well wish your way. All I can say is that treatments have changed drastically since my husband and I were diagnosed. Most treatments for male Leukemia patients last 3 years these days instead of the 6 my husband endeared. A son of our friends in San Clemente was your age, healthy, recently engaged at the time, and out of the blue got a brain tumor. He had immediate surgery, therapy to recover and is doing so great–you’d never know he went through all that. His wedding last year was a truly joyous event. You have so much to look forward to and there is a lot of love in Dana Point for you and your family. We’re all pulling for you.

I don’t know if your mom told you or not, but Andrew McMahon, who graduated from Dana in 2000, also had leukemia. Had, being the operative word here!! It was a rough go sometimes, but he’s a strong guy who, like you, had lots of friends and positive thoughts and prayers backing him up. You may know of him: he’s the piano player and front man for Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin. Just today, he was hanging out with my girls, Amy and Jenny, and some other friends. He’s been on tour for a while and is as strong as a horse. Please know that you are in my prayers, and you will beat this thing!!
